Cubs to acquire Braxton Garrett from Marlins as rotation building continues: Source

In exchange, the Marlins will receive Triple-A first baseman Jonathon Long and Double-A right-hander Jace Beck, a league source said.Garrett missed part of the 2024 season and all of the 2025 campaign while recovering from Tommy John surgery. He’s spent most of this season with Miami’s Triple-A affiliate.

Garrett, who will turn 29 on Wednesday, was the No. 7 pick in the 2016 draft out of high school. He has shown flashes of being an effective major-league starter, most notably in 2023, when he went 9-7 with a 3.66 ERA over 159 2/3 innings.With a surplus of pitching talent, the Marlins have been in a running dialogue with the Cubs, an organization tilted toward hitting prospects, which makes it somewhat easier to line up these types of deals.Last winter, the Cubs acquired Edward Cabrera from the Marlins for outfielder Owen Caissie and two minor-league infielders.
