Donald Trump announced on August 2 that he would halt planned US military strikes against Iran after Iranian officials and regional allies requested a diplomatic resolution. The president posted on Truth Social that the decision was “subject to being able to rapidly make a DEAL,” signaling that the military option remains very much on the table.
What’s on the table
The proposed deal touches several pressure points that matter well beyond the Middle East. Trump outlined demands that include the “Immediate, Complete, and Total OPENING OF THE HORMUZ STRAIT,” a resolution to Iran’s nuclear ambitions, the lifting of the US naval blockade, and a return to Iranian oil exports.
Roughly a fifth of the world’s oil supply passes through the Strait of Hormuz on any given day. Trump described the planned strike as potentially “the biggest attack since World War II.” Talks are set to begin on August 3, following discussions with leaders from Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the UAE, all of whom reportedly urged de-escalation.
