Romania is introducing a new road toll system that will change how both trucks and passenger cars are charged for using the country’s national road network.
The TollRO system will take effect on August 31 for vehicles weighing more than 3.5 tons. Under the new model, charges for heavy vehicles will be calculated according to the actual distance traveled, while tolls for passenger cars will increasingly depend on the vehicle’s environmental standard, BTA reported.
The reform was initially scheduled to enter into force on October 1. However, Romanian lawmakers moved the date forward at the end of July to avoid putting funding under the country’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan at risk.
For heavy trucks and TIR vehicles, toll prices will depend on the category of road, the vehicle’s total weight and its emissions standard.
On first-class and ordinary roads, charges will range from 0.08 to 0.31 Romanian lei, or approximately 0.02 to 0.06 euros, per kilometer. On expressways and highways, the rates will be higher, ranging from 0.17 to 0.62 lei, or about 0.03 to 0.12 euros, per kilometer, depending on the truck category.
