Opposition MP Marvin Gonzales has described the public’s response to Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar and ministers in her Cabinet on Saturday during African Emancipation Day celebrations as an effect of citizens feeling betrayed.While delivering her African Emancipation Day address at the Arise Monument near the Treasury Building on Independence Square, Port of Spain, on Saturday, Minister of Culture and Community Development Michelle Benjamin was heckled.Benjamin, who spoke before the annual procession, drew boos from sections of the crowd after mentioning Persad-Bissessar.As she left the podium, one attendee shouted: ‘We will remember that you promised food for tomorrow while we starve today.’Later on Saturday, during the African Emancipation Day celebrations at the Lidj Yasu Omowale Emancipation Village at the Queen’s Park Savannah, Port of Spain, sections of the crowd began to jeer, following an announcement by the Emancipation Support Committee of Trinidad and Tobago (ESCTT) director Dr Asha Kambon that the Persad-Bissessar could no longer attend the event.The reaction prompted Kambon to urge attendees to maintain decorum despite their personal opinions.‘Everyone has their own views, but please be respectful,’ she told the crowd, noting that whether the Prime Minister showed up or not, she was an invited guest who was simply unable to attend, and asked those present to remain respectful regardless of their view, political or otherwise.‘We should treat all our guests with the same level of respect,’ she said.In a Facebook post yesterday, Gonzales said: “Yesterday (Saturday) was clearly a difficult day for the Prime Minister and her Ministers at African Emancipation Day celebrations. This happens when the people feel betrayed and an SoE (state of emergency) with PDOs (preventive detention orders) was issued to keep the masses suppressed under a new form of enslavement.”He added: “Phones are now tapped to listen to the conversations of the masses because of a thinned-skinned government that hates criticisms especially when it comes from the masses. Perhaps, that’s the reason why they will never have an Independence Day Parade in Port of Spain as long as they are in office. They are hiding from the masses! They are hiding from the people!”
