Apple just did something it almost never does: admitted it’s playing catch-up. The company unveiled a sweeping overhaul of Siri on June 8, integrating advanced AI capabilities from both OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini, then directly compared its features against those competitors.
The upgrade represents Siri’s most significant transformation since the assistant launched alongside the iPhone 4S in 2011.
What Apple actually announced
The new Siri runs on Apple’s broader Apple Intelligence platform, which the company has been teasing since WWDC 2024. That’s when Apple first announced ChatGPT integration.
Siri will offer writing assistance, enhanced search, data handling tools, and productivity features across iOS, iPadOS, and macOS.
