A large number of people performed rituals relating to Aadi Perukku festival on the steps of the Kamalalayam tank in Tiruvarur on Monday.Usually, rituals such as offering sweets, fruits, blouse pieces, yellow threads, turmeric, betel leaves, and other auspicious materials are offered to the Cauvery by the newly-wed couples after performing puja on the river banks under the guidance of the elders in their respective families, in the delta region.Women perform this ritual seeking the blessings of the Cauvery for a peaceful family life.This year as the Odampokki riverbed remained largely dry with thin sheets of water at some places, many chose the Kamalalayam temple tank of Sri Thyagarajaswamy temple celebrate Aadi Perukku.Right from the Sun rise to around noon, women performed the puja on the tank steps and exchanged pleasantries by offering/accepting “mangala porutkal” with each other. Some of them tied ‘yellow thread’ around each other’s neck as part of the ritual.In Thanjavur, newly-wed celebrated Aadi Perukku on the banks of the Cauvery in Thiruvaiyaru.
