Forty-seven Democratic members of the House of Representatives last Thursday wrote to Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum and acting director of the National Park Service Jessica Bowron objecting to the Trump administration’s plans to convert Washington, D.C.’s East Potomac Golf Links, which has three courses and was one of the country’s first desegregated public golf courses, into a single, championship-style course—with more expensive tee times.
U.S. Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.), Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton (D‑D.C.) and their colleagues demand Burgum and Bowron provide key details of the plan, including the total cost, who exactly pays what and how the changes would impact golf course pricing, the environment and bike and walking paths. They want answers by no later than Aug. 14.
Raskin is the ranking member of the Judiciary Committee. He is expected to play a key leadership role in the 120th Congress if, as analysts predict, the Democrats win a majority in the House in the midterm elections. With control of the House and its vast investigatory powers, the Democrats would hold hearings that require Trump administration officials to testify. A hearing on East Potomac Golf Links is a distinct possibility.
