Football’s transfer market continues to shatter spending benchmarks, with Premier League clubs collectively dropping £3 billion during the 2025 summer window alone. Alexander Isak’s reported £125 million move to Liverpool has set a new British transfer record, pushing the boundaries of what clubs are willing to pay for elite talent.
And yet, for all the eye-watering sums flowing through the sport, not a single major transfer has involved cryptocurrency or blockchain-based payments.
The numbers behind football’s spending spree
The global all-time transfer record still belongs to Neymar’s €222 million move from Barcelona to Paris Saint-Germain, set way back in August 2017. That’s nearly a decade ago. For context, Bitcoin was trading around $4,000 when that deal closed.
Isak’s £125 million fee to Liverpool is massive by any standard, representing a new club record and the highest transfer fee ever paid by a British club. But it still falls well short of Neymar’s benchmark when converted to euros.
