Officials of Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation Ltd. (TNPDCL) have begun the task of re-examining the domestic and commercial electricity services in Tiruchi, which complained of “exorbitant” electricity bills.According to sources, the offices of TNPDCL continue to receive complaints of inflated electricity bills for June-July bi-monthly cycle. While a section of them preferred written complaints with the officials on exorbitant bills, many consumers reached out to the officials concerned over phone. Those who were apprehensive of service disconnection have reportedly paid the bills. A section of the consumers is waiting for the officials to recheck the functioning of the meters and other aspects of electricity consumption.Sources said 5,467 service connections in Tiruchi were identified as having used a large number of units of electricity during the last billing cycle. Senior officials, including Chief Engineer, Superintending Engineers, and others have been tasked with re-examining the services. They have been given targets and they will have to report within August 7.A senior official told The Hindu that nearly 30% of verification had been completed. As per the inputs received from officials, there have been no discrepancies in the assessment. It was observed that demand was high in June this year due to the prevailing summer like situation. In some cases, it was observed that April-May month bills were lower than those compared to June-July month bills as many families had travelled for vacation.The official added that revised bills would be issued to the consumers if there were discrepancies in assessment.
