MANILA, Philippines—The Philippine National Police (PNP) is intensifying surveillance operations and expanding coordination with Southeast Asian law enforcement agencies in its the crackdown on smuggling, especially cigarettes.
“The PNP is crafting measures with its regional counterparts to heighten border patrols against smuggling as well as trace and identify the origin of these contraband,” said PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. in a statement on Sunday.
“Our operations are continuous and this includes stronger alliance and coordination with other law enforcement agencies here and our regional neighbors,” added Nartatez.
He said stronger intelligence sharing and joint operations with Asean law enforcement agencies are key to intercepting smuggled goods and dismantling transnational smuggling networks.
