The European Commission warned that Bulgaria’s newly adopted budget could result in significantly higher net spending growth than previously agreed, according to EC spokesperson Balazs Ujvari.

Responding to a question from Bulgarian media "Club Z", Ujvari said Brussels was closely monitoring Bulgaria’s fiscal situation after parliament approved the state budget with a deficit target of 5.7%.

“The budget adopted by the Bulgarian parliament on Wednesday would lead to a much higher growth in net spending,” the Commission spokesperson said.

The warning comes after the European Commission recommended launching an excessive deficit procedure against Bulgaria, which was later initiated by the EU Council, due to expectations that the country’s deficit would reach 4.1% this year.

Ujvari said the Commission would continue to follow developments closely and assess whether Bulgaria’s spending path remains in line with previously agreed commitments.
