US President Donald Trump's social media platform, Truth Social, has begun offering a $100,000-a-month service that gives Wall Street traders direct access to his posts through an application programming interface (API), raising concerns over insider trading, market fairness and the use of public office for private gain. The service, called Truth API, became available on Saturday, as reported by AP. While similar high-speed data feeds are offered by other social media companies and media organisations, critics argue Truth Social is different because Trump's posts frequently move financial markets through announcements on tariffs, wars, monetary policy and other government decisions.$100,000 service raises ethics concerns"If this was the CEO of a public company, this would be jail time," said Irene Aldridge, head of Able Alpha Trading, which does not plan to subscribe to the service. "We have a President of the United States who has the front seat to all the action, who makes all the decisions, and he's disclosing this ahead of time to a select group."Asked about the service and whether White House lawyers had reviewed it, the White House declined to comment and referred questions to Trump Media & Technology Group, the publicly traded parent company of Truth Social. The company defended the offering in a statement, accusing Democratic critics of mischaracterising the service "out of ideological opposition to free markets or a failure to grasp the distinction between public and nonpublic information - or, quite possibly, both."Market-moving posts create trading opportunitiesTrump's frequent posts have repeatedly triggered sharp movements in stocks, bonds and currencies, creating opportunities for high-frequency trading firms that profit from buying and selling assets within milliseconds.According to the report, Trump's recent Truth Social posts have included threats to impose higher tariffs on Canada, end a nuclear deal with Saudi Arabia and widen the Iran conflict. Advance access to such posts could allow traders to profit from movements in the Canadian dollar, nuclear energy stocks and oil futures."For the big guys, it's going to be something they need," said Joe Saluzzi, co-founder of Themis Trading, estimating that around 100 high-frequency trading firms could be interested in the service. "It's market-moving information."The new service comes as trading firms continue investing in faster data feeds and direct network connections to reduce delays in receiving information. Advances in artificial intelligence have also made it easier to analyse posts instantly for market-moving signals.Trump's pattern of making surprise announcements, policy reversals and dramatic statements online has created frequent opportunities for traders to profit from sudden price swings. According to the report, such reversals can allow traders to profit from both upward and downward market movements within fractions of a second. In addition to Trump's posts, the API will also include content from other "high-ranking" Truth Social contributors, potentially including Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump.Debate over fairness and retail investorsTruth Social has maintained that the information will be released to paying customers and the general public simultaneously, arguing there is no issue of fairness. However, Saluzzi dismissed that argument."Somebody who buys the info and has a system built to process it will be able to act quicker than you and me," he said. "The loser is always the retail investor."Company endorsements also move stocksThe report also noted that Trump has increasingly posted about publicly traded companies, triggering immediate movements in their share prices."The pimping of specific companies - obviously Wall Street would like to know that before other people," said Dylan Hedler-Gaudette, a federal ethics expert at Project on Government Oversight. "It's a real mess."In April, shares of Palantir Technologies briefly recorded their biggest jump in a year after Trump praised the company in a Truth Social post that included its stock ticker. Later the same month, Intel shares also rose in after-hours trading after Trump congratulated the company in another post.Truth Media seeks new revenue streamIt remains unclear which firms have subscribed to the service. According to the report, none of several major high-frequency trading firms, including Citadel Securities and XTX Markets, responded to requests for comment. The report said that if only three firms subscribe to the $100,000-a-month service, the resulting revenue would be enough to double Trump Media's reported annual revenue of $3.7 million last year. The additional revenue could help the company, whose shares have fallen 75% since Trump took office last year while continuing to report hundreds of millions of dollars in losses despite increased traffic driven by Trump's policy announcements on the platform.Political scrutiny may intensifyThe White House has increasingly relied on Truth Social for official announcements. According to the report, when journalists seek details on government policies, the press office often forwards Trump's Truth Social posts or tells reporters to "Wait for the Truth."The report added that the service could face greater political scrutiny if Democrats regain control of Congress. Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren said in a statement on Friday that Democrats would investigate the matter."We will haul in those responsible for this open corruption to answer to the American people," Warren said.Meanwhile, Craig Holman, a lobbyist with Public Citizen, predicted that Trump could rely even more heavily on Truth Social for major policy announcements if the company's financial losses continue."That's absolutely going to happen," Holman said. "Trump knows how to sell products."(With inputs from AP)
