The IEC said the first day of voter registration started even better.
Despite harsh weather conditions in some parts of KwaZulu-Natal, the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) expressed confidence that the first day of the voter registration weekend was a success.
IEC Provincial Electoral Officer (PEO) Ntombfuthi Masinga said that out of over 270,000 people who visited voting stations in the country before 3pm on Saturday, 63,000 of them were recorded in the province, and 8,500 were new registrations.
She said there were 5,029 voting stations in the province, including 146 tents that were erected as temporary structures in areas where there are no permanent structures that could be used as voting stations.
“In the northern coastal area of KZN, we could not pitch the tents on Friday due to strong winds, but our suppliers ensured they were ready by Saturday morning for the voting stations to start operating at 8am,” said Masinga.
