The Anna Nagar Crime Branch has booked four individuals, including former American College Principal Davamani Christober, over an alleged ₹24-lakh job racket promising positions like college clerkships.The case was registered at the Anna Nagar Crime Branch police station here on Saturday based on a complaint lodged by S. Kirubakaran, a resident of Yagappa Nagar, Madurai.The accused named in this case are Christy Jeevagan, his wife Regino, Vasanthi, and Davamani Christober, the former principal and secretary of The American College.According to the complaint, Christy Jeevagan and his wife Regino were introduced to Kirubakaran’s family through Vasanthi during the previous DMK regime. It is alleged that they built trust by claiming to have close ties with key DMK functionaries, including those in the top brass.Subsequently, they convinced the victims by claiming that they manage staff recruitments at The American College with the approval of former principal Davamani and that they had already secured an office assistant job for the complainant’s son.Stating that huge sums of money had to be paid for junior assistant, clerk, and assistant positions, they collected a total of ₹24 lakh in various instalments from Kirubakaran and his family through bank and UPI transactions.After receiving the money, they had reportedly issued an appointment order for the junior assistant position and sent him to American College to join duty on November 13, 2024.However, when he went there, he was turned away. When a suspicious Kirubakaran asked for his money back, Christy Jeevagan reportedly gave him a cheque for ₹8 lakh, which was dishonoured due to insufficient funds in the account.Following this, Kirubakaran lodged a complaint with Madurai City Police Commissioner. An FIR has now been registered. While Anna Nagar police have already conducted an inquiry with Christy Jeevagan, they are planning to conduct subsequent inquiries with others, police said.
