According to the autopsy, Fox died from drowning along with sharp and blunt-force injuries caused by the shark attack. The report said one extremely powerful bite stretched from her right knee to her abdomen. Her pelvis was broken in several places, and a major artery was cut. Investigators also found serious injuries to her right knee, thigh and abdomen, while her wetsuit was torn in the same areas as the wounds. Fox disappeared while swimming with the Kelp Krawlers, an open-water swimming group she helped start. The group was heading toward Lovers Point Beach, and she was swimming ahead of most of the others when she suddenly vanished.Around the same time, a driver called 911 after seeing a shark leap out of the water about 100 yards off Lovers Point. The witness told authorities it looked like a person was in the shark’s mouth before the animal disappeared beneath the surface. As swimmers rushed back to shore and counted everyone, they realized Fox was missing. Her husband of 30 years, Jean-Francois Vanreusel, was also part of the swim that day. Sharon Carey, who stayed closer to shore during the swim, later told The Mercury News, “It started to click that everybody was back on shore but Erica. I just felt numb. I was hoping that maybe she got out of the water and then decided to walk back.”Emergency crews launched a massive search using boats, helicopters and divers. After nearly 15 hours, the official search was called off, but the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office continued working with Bedrock Ocean Exploration and the Angel’s Recovery Dive Team. Fox’s body was found six days later after washing ashore near Wilder Ranch State Park. Erica Fox was an experienced triathlete who understood the risksFriends said Fox loved the ocean and never stayed away from a challenge. She had completed two Half-Ironman races and took part in the Escape from Alcatraz triathlon for nearly 20 years, according to her father, who spoke with NBC News. She had also attended a “Sharktober” seminar at Hopkins Marine Station to learn more about sharks and ocean safety.Lisa Jensen, a fellow Kelp Krawlers member, remembered Fox as “an incredibly cheerful, bubbly, funny, joyful, kind human being” who understood the risks that came with open-water swimming.Her death was the third shark attack linked to Lovers Point since June 2022. Another Kelp Krawlers member, Steve Bruemmer, survived a serious shark attack in the same area in 2022. While shark attacks remain rare along the California coast, Fox’s death has renewed attention on the dangers that can exist even for experienced swimmers.
