Passenger vehicle sales jump 33% in July as Maruti tops 2 lakh units

Maruti Suzuki crossed the 2-lakh domestic wholesale mark for the first time, while Tata Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra, Hyundai and several other automakers also posted robust sales growth.

Led by positive sentiments and new launches in the market, the passenger vehicle (PV) makers have reported positive numbers, some even recording best-ever July sales during the month, with the industry growing by around 33 per cent year-on-year (YoY) to 3.65-3.70 lakh units, as compared with around 3.50 lakh units in the same month last year.For instance, market leader Maruti Suzuki India (MSIL) recorded domestic wholesales (dispatches to dealers) of more than 2 lakh units (including its light commercial vehicles) for the first time, followed by Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M), and Hyundai Motor India.MSIL reported domestic wholesale sales of 1,96,203 PVs during the month, up 42.5 per cent YoY, compared with 1,37,776 units in the corresponding month last year.The GST rate cut in September last year, followed by repo and interest rate cuts, continues to attract customers even though there were a few price hikes during the year, Partho Banerjee, Senior Executive Officer – Marketing and Sales, MSIL, told reporters.“Fundamentally, these three tailwinds are very much there...The company has witnessed all-round growth across segments from entry-level small cars to mid SUVs to bigger SUVs in July,” Banerjee said, adding that CNG models also continue to have robust demand, with 83,000 units sold in July.Tata Motors, Mahindra and Hyundai report robust sales‘Sierra’ maker, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, has reported a growth of 58 per cent YoY to 60,048 units in July as compared with 39,521 units in the same month last year.Similarly, M&M’s domestic wholesale sales grew by 20.4 per cent YoY to 60,048 units during the month, against 49,871 units in July last year.After a lull, Hyundai Motor India also recorded the highest-ever monthly sales of 54,210 units, a 23.3 per cent YoY increase from 43,973 units in the corresponding month last year.Other manufacturers such as Toyota Kirloskar Motor, Kia India, JSW MG Motor India, and Honda Cars India also reported growth in their monthly sales.Two-wheeler makers maintain growth momentumIn the two-wheeler manufacturers, market leader Hero MotoCorp reported a YoY growth of 21.6 per cent YoY to 5,01,403 units in July as compared with 4,12,397 units in the same month last year.Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India reported a 2 per cent YoY growth to 4,76,436 units, against 4,66,331 two-wheelers in July 2025.Similarly, Royal Enfield and Suzuki Motorcycle India also reported growth in their numbers.Published on August 1, 2026
