A total of 12 people were safely evacuated by sea from the beach of Porto Germeno, west of Athens, during an overnight rescue operation as a massive wildfire continued to burn through the wider area. The operation was coordinated by Greece’s Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, the Unified Coordination Centre for Operations and Crisis Management (ESKEDIK), and the Hellenic Coast Guard’s Operations Centre.Rescue teams carried out the evacuation under extremely challenging weather conditions, with northerly winds reaching Force 7 on the Beaufort scale and gusts of up to Force 8, complicating efforts at sea.The mission involved a Hellenic Coast Guard patrol vessel, a Fire Service boat, as well as several private vessels assisting in the operation. All 12 people stranded on the beach were safely transferred aboard the Coast Guard patrol vessel and transported to Alepochori, where the operation concluded without injuries.Authorities said Coast Guard units remain on high alert in the area. Two Coast Guard patrol boats, together with private vessels, continue to patrol the coastline as the wildfire remains active and firefighting operations continue. The rescue comes as Greece battles multiple large wildfires fueled by strong winds and extreme fire conditions across several regions of the country.
