For the second day in a row, Jamaica picked up four medals in the athletics programme at the 2026 Commonwealth Games as Sanique Walker, Assinie Wilson, Christopher Taylor and Alana Reid all finished on the podium in their respective events. Walker captured Jamaica’s first medal of the day when she won gold in the women’s 400 metres hurdles final. She crossed the line in a personal best 54.00 seconds to get the better of England’s Emily Newnham who finished second in 54.04. Canada’s Savannah Sutherland captured the bronze medal in 54.16 to round off the podium positions. Shiann Salmon, the other Jamaican in the field, crossed the line in 55.54 to place fifth. Jamaica earned its second medal of the day in the men’s 400m hurdles final when Wilson earned the bronze medal in a time of 49.22. The gold medal went to Ezekiel Nathaniel of Nigeria who finished in 48.47, while England’s Jake Minshull copped the silver medal in 48.99. Taylor was the third Jamaican on the day to leave with a medal when he powered to a personal best of 20.11 to finish third in the men’s 200m final. The gold medal went to Sinesipho Dambile of South Africa who clocked the only sub-20 second time in the final as he crossed the line in 19.96. Nigeria’s Udodi Onwuzurike took the silver medal in 20.09 while Jamaica’s Jevaughn Powell was fifth in 20.36. Despite a heavy Jamaican presence in the women’s 200m final, only Reid found herself on the podium as her time of 22.56 was enough to claim the bronze medal. Heavy favourite Adaejah Hodge of the British Virgin Islands (BVI) won the gold in 22.07 while Trinidadian sprinter Shaniqua Bascombe took the silver in 22.35. Jamaica’s Ashanti Moore, 22.57, and Lavanya Williams, 22.62, were fourth and fifth respectively. The results mean Jamaica now sits 11th in the medal table with a tally of 12 medals – five gold, two silver, and five bronze. Australia heads the table with 128 medals 55 gold, 30 silver and 43 bronze. In the women’s 800m final, Kelly-Ann Beckford’s time of two minute, 02.77 (2:02.77) was only enough to place seventh as England’s Georgia Bell took the title 1:59.51. ONLY REPRESENTATIVE Ackelia Smith will be Jamaica’s only representative in the women’s long jump final after she advanced from qualifying Group B with a mark of 6.58 metres. She finished fourth in the field and claimed one of the non-automatic qualifying spots. However, it was a frustrating session for Nia Robinson in Group A as she fouled all three of her attempts and ended her series without a mark. In the mixed 4x400m relay, Delano Kennedy, Shana-Kaye Anderson, Antonio Watson and Leah Anderson crossed the line in 3:17.36 to finish third in heat one and booked their spot in the final. They finished behind Nigeria who posted the fastest time in qualifying, 3:14.58, and Australia, 3:15.21. The final day of action in the athletics programme is set for today, with Jamaican athletes set to compete in a number of finals. gregory.bryce@gleanerjm.com
