NXP Semiconductors is in discussions to acquire Ambarella, the edge AI chip specialist behind the vision processors powering automotive cameras and self-driving systems. The Financial Times first reported the talks on July 31, 2026, and while no deal is guaranteed, the market reacted immediately: Ambarella’s stock surged, and NXP’s shares fell more than 3%.
What Ambarella actually does
Ambarella makes chips that process visual data at the edge, meaning inside the camera or sensor itself rather than sending raw footage to a central computer. The company carries a market valuation of roughly $3.3 billion. In May 2026, the company announced a long-term partnership with Hanwha that could generate more than $800 million in revenue over its duration.
This also isn’t the first time Ambarella has explored its strategic options. Around mid-2025, the company was reported to be considering a potential sale, a process that sent its shares up more than 20% at the time. The current NXP discussions appear to be the more concrete outcome of that broader review.
