Firefighters have been stretched thin battling wildfires across Greece under very windy conditions.
In the 24 hours from 6 pm Thursday to 6 pm Friday, 51 new blazes had started and firefighters were battling a total of 73 wildfires, Fire Service spokesman Vassilis Vathrakogiannis told reporters Friday afternoon.
In many cases, high winds have prevented firefighting planes and helicopters from operating. These vehicles also cannot operate at night.
Most of the fires were spread across the mainland, especially in the Athens area and the nearby regional unit of Viotia, where the most difficult of the fires is raging, according to Vathrakogiannis.
