Lieutenant-Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu on Friday led a plantation drive organised by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA), during which more than one lakh native trees and shrubs were planted across 77 locations in the national capital.The L-G, who is also the DDA Chairperson, directed the urban body to make such drives a regular exercise and appoint a nodal officer for each site to ensure the survival of saplings. At Kamla Nehru Ridge, Mr. Sandhu said plantation efforts should evolve into a people’s movement with greater youth participation.“Such initiatives should be driven by the youth and aimed at them,” he said, adding that the present generation has a responsibility to leave behind an ecologically richer Delhi.He also called for similar drives across other Ridge areas and urged the DDA to take a more proactive role in expanding the city’s green cover.Close to 200 people, including students, participated in the drive at Kamla Nehru Ridge.Similar drives were also held at Aravalli Biodiversity Park and Sanjay Van, featuring native species such as dhok, amaltas, peepal and neem. The events were part of the urban body’s afforestation programme and the 70 Lakh Plantation Mission, under which the DDA is tasked with planting 23 lakh saplings in Delhi.
