The Government of Tamil Nadu’s newly constituted Revenue Augmentation Committee,chaired by Montek Singh Ahluwalia, eminent economist and former Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission of India, held a preliminary meeting on Friday via virtual mode.In the meeting the Committee discussed its Terms of Reference and the manner in which it intends to carry forward its work.The Committee will be supported by a dedicated research team drawn from the Tax Policy Research Unit and the Financial Data Analytics Unit of the Finance Dept and will also draw on experiences from other States, the Finance Dept said in a statement.It also said it will frame its recommendations across short-term, medium-term and long term measures, and will start deliberations at the earliest with a physical meeting as early as in August.
Relevant stakeholders will be met and inputs will be invited through e-mail in the course of its work, so that its recommendations reflect a balanced and comprehensive assessment, the statement added.The Committee has been formed to advise the Government on measures to augment the State’s own tax and non-tax revenues, identify new and under-tapped sources of revenue, plug leakages and improve compliance in revenue-collecting departments, and enhance revenue through regulatory and taxation reform.Published on July 31, 2026
