As I’ve folded and unfolded the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 8 throughout the last week, I’ve both seen the point of its novel design and realized it’s very much a phone nearing the end of its first decade. That’s a massive compliment; Samsung’s successfully tweaked its design and features to smooth out flaws in ways that make me want to shout “finally!” The Z Flip 8’s second screen works and behaves as it should have all along, and it combines with a good camera array that puts the phone in the running for the best smartphone in the flip division.
That said, there are concessions the Z Flip 8 makes compared to nonflip phones, in addition to dubious new AI features and a $100 price increase I don’t love to see. Because of those, I spent my first week with the Z Flip 8 hoping to see what it could do to convince me that flip phones are a viable alternative to the not-flippable phones I prefer. Here’s what I discovered.
