In my week or so of trotting around with the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8, I’ve been met with “what’s that?” and “that’s so cool!” from friends and onlookers nearly every time I take it out of my pocket. It’s hard to blame them. While foldable phones are far from new, the Z Fold 8 nails the design in a way that’s both more fun and functional than what we’ve seen in years past.
Samsung’s new passport-sized phone morphs from a compact 5.5-inch handset for texting and calling into a 7.4-inch tablet for reading and binge-watching, giving you a uniquely comfortable design for both scenarios, whereas previous foldables were too awkward or bulky. It also holds its own against the best smartphones in most of the ways that matter, with fast performance, excellent battery life, two gorgeous displays and a host of neat software tricks.
But as is the case with most foldables, all this luxury comes at a high cost. So, is the Z Fold 8 worth its steep starting price of $1,900? And what exactly do you give up in the name of versatility? Here’s what I think after a week of multitasking, gaming, streaming, reading and taking dozens of photos on Samsung’s one-of-a-kind foldable.
