Hugo Broos has stepped down from his role as South Africa head coach following the expiration of his contract.South Africa said on social media on Friday that Broos, 74, would be departing from the role he has held for more than five years, a tenure which saw the Belgian coach lead the nation to their first-ever appearance in a World Cup knockout stage match this summer.Speaking in a press conference, Broos said the “long absence from my family and the lonely moments in South Africa have led me to make this difficult decision”, as he announced he would not be extending his contract. He also alluded to retirement, by mentioning his “pension”.In July, the South African Football Association (SAFA) issued two separate statements, the first dismissing reports that Broos had been sacked from his role, with the second statement denying he had been offered a one-year contract extension.
