For long, Kalavasal junction has been known of traffic congestion. However, even after the construction of a massive flyover to ease the bottleneck, smooth vehicular movement has been left much to be desired. These days, traffic congestion is basically due to lack of proper enforcement. All vehicles use the flyover for crossing the junction from one side to other side of Dindigul by-pass road. This goes on uninterrupted. However, those vehicles proceeding from Dindigul By-pass road towards Theni Road or vice-versa cause all the trouble.Especially, the buses, including mofussil ones, proceeding towards Kochadai/ Achchampathu are halted right at the edge of the entrance of Mudakku Salai Road at the junction. The bus drivers stop the heavy vehicles right in the middle of the carriage way of Theni Road. In the process of making a sharp right turn while going from Arapalayam bus stand, these buses block the entire road though it is wider. This leaves the vehicles, following the bus, stranded at the junction. The piled-up vehicles block free flow of vehicles from other roads too. Same is the case with vehicles coming from Theni Road and taking left turn towards Arapalayam. On this side, it is the share autorickshaws that cause the major blockade, though police have put up barricades to separate vehicles proceeding on different directions.A taxi driver suggested that making the buses /autorickshaws halt on Theni Road some 50 metres away from the junction would solve this perennial problem.Similarly, provision of openings under the Kalavasal flyover on both sides of the junction will also ease traffic congestion at the junction. At present, those vehicles that need to take a U-turn on Dindigul By-pass Road are now forced to go up to the junction. They join other vehicles waiting for green signal to take right turns and then take the U-turn.Minor tweaking in traffic enforcement and road engineering will bring big relief to road users.
