Although treatment advances for thyroid cancer have reshaped the management landscape and improved disease control, they have also raised new questions and considerations for clinicians, according to ASCO's new guideline for systemic treatment of thyroid cancer.
The recent approval of multikinase inhibitors and BRAF-, RET-, and NTRK-targeted agents and selective use of immunotherapy all expanded the therapeutic armamentarium, although still to be determined is the exact appropriate use and sequencing, said the expert panel, co-chaired by Nabil Saba, MD, of Emory University in Atlanta, and Beth M. Beadle, MD, of Stanford University in California.
"The purpose of this guideline is to provide evidence-based, consensus-driven recommendations in the use of systemic therapy for different types of thyroid cancers with the goal of optimizing therapeutic decision-making, standardizing care across diverse clinical settings, and identifying opportunities for future trials and approaches," the authors explained.
In the following interview, Saba, director of the Head and Neck Cancer Medical Oncology Program, discussed what led to the guideline and offered additional details and perspectives.
