We’re going into the Simcoe Day long weekend in Ontario, even if most people still call it by its beloved historic name, “August civic holiday.” The newer name comes from John Graves Simcoe, the first lieutenant-governor of Upper Canada, who made this the first place in the British Empire to ban importing slaves. To kick off the weekend, the TTC is hosting the 13th Annual Emancipation Day Underground Freedom Train Ride tonight. More on what to do on the long weekend coming up.
