DUBAI: British group Massive Attack is being investigated by police in Singapore after members of the band reportedly raised a Palestinian flag on stage during a concert there on Wednesday.
The band played The Star Theatre, its only date in the country on the current tour. The Straits Times reported that people on stage raised a flag toward the end of the set. Video shared online showed the two men holding it between them while the audience applauded.
Police confirmed to the BBC that an investigation was underway. The Infocomm Media Development Authority, the country’s media regulator, said separately that it was examining whether the concert’s license conditions had been breached.
Foreign flags and national emblems may not be displayed publicly in Singapore without official permission. Breaking the rule carries up to six months in prison, a fine of up to $389, or both.
Massive Attack, led by Robert “3D” Del Naja and Grant “Daddy G” Marshall, formed in Bristol in 1988 and has refused to perform in Israel since 1999. Del Naja was one of hundreds detained at a protest in London earlier this year against the UK government’s ban on Palestine Action.
