The missile left a huge 33ft crater near the Tarnawa Kolonia village located 57 miles from Poland's border with Ukraine11:39, 31 Jul 2026A Russian missile capable of carrying nuclear warheads has hit Poland, officials have said.‌The Kh-101 cruise missile "exploded" upon landing in the east of Poland, a NATO member country, in the early hours of Thursday, Poland's deputy minister of national defence has said. Speaking on TVN24, Cezary Tomczyk described the missile as "potentially very dangerous".‌While no one was injured in the incident, the missile left a huge 10-metre (33ft) wide crater near the Tarnawa Kolonia village in the Lublin province, 57 miles from Poland's border with Ukraine. This took place as Russia launched missile and drone attacks over Ukraine, killing at least 10 civilians and injuring more than 50.‌In response to the missile entering Poland, NATO fighter jets were deployed, with the alliance's secretary general Mark Rutte describing the incident as "yet another reckless act by Russia and a dangerous consequence of its war against Ukraine".Donald Tusk, the Polish prime minister, explained that, while "all the indications" were that the missile was Russian Kh-101, "there were absolutely no reasons to believe Poland was the target".‌Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said at least 10 regions in Ukraine were targeted in the attack, destroying dozens of homes and buildings. More than 70 missiles, many of them ballistic, were launched by Russia, according to the president.Ukraine also intercepted more than 260 of around 280 attack drones fired, The Express reports. Russia's defence ministry said it targeted Ukrainian airbases, arms factories and military telecommunications and logistics facilities, including drone factories and storage depots, as well as plants for missiles, aircraft repairs, electronics and chemicals.More than 56,000 people sheltered across underground stations in Kyiv on Wednesday night as the capital was also targeted by ballistic missiles. A 31-year-old man was killed and two others were wounded.‌On X, Kyiv's foreign minister, Andrii Sybiha, said the missile incident in Poland was a clear demonstration that strengthening Ukraine’s air defences would also guarantee wider European security.A NATO spokesperson said as well as fighter jets, an attack helicopter and two other aircraft were scrambled in response to the missile alert, while ground defences were also activated.
