Toronto city council members set aside their political differences Thursday to join in a standing ovation for Coun. Gord Perks as he delivered a farewell speech in the chamber. He even got an embrace from an ideological foe.

It was a moment of unity in a chamber that is often riven by polarizing debate. And it arrived despite the fact that not all the members applauding have always agreed with Perks, a leader of council’s left, during his long tenure at city hall, much less endorsed the advice with which he ended his remarks.
