Today I find myself wandering the streets of Moutai in China. I mean, I didn’t just wake up here by mistake and it wasn’t a big surprise. Wouldn’t that be a thing though? I knew this trip was happening, but it still feels a little like a dream. Sometimes life throws something so extraordinary your way, that you’ve just got to pinch yourself to make sure you’re still breathing and haven’t crossed over the rainbow yet.
It could be that moment when you meet someone who gives you a mosh pit of dancing butterflies in your tummy, or when you’re standing in a crowd watching your favourite band perform. Or maybe it’s when you get to see places you never expected to see and experience things you probably never could have, no matter how much moolah you’ve got sitting in the bank. It’s the kind of experience you win because you’re one lucky fish. Maybe it’s a work trip or a special event that’s been carefully put together, filled with wonderful people and, miraculously, none of those weirdos who somehow manage to spoil things for everyone else. Everything just clicks. The puzzle pieces all fit and you know it’s time for the pinch.
I’ve been having that feeling all week. Travelling somewhere new and experiencing things for the very first time always makes me feel as though I’ve won the lottery. New cultures, new food and completely different surroundings do that to me every single time. A few years ago I was sent to America for liquor tastings and to interview one of my favourite bands. Imagine that. It was my drink of choice and one of my favourite bands all wrapped into one unforgettable adventure.
