South African Grammy-winning singer Tyla has cancelled the Lagos stop of her APOP World Tour, ending days of speculation over whether she would proceed with her first headline concert in Nigeria following calls for a boycott over renewed xenophobic tensions between Nigeria and South Africa.
The Lagos concert, originally scheduled for December 22 as part of her African tour dates alongside Cape Town and Johannesburg, was quietly removed from the tour schedule. As of press time, neither Tyla nor her management had publicly explained the decision, leaving fans and industry stakeholders to draw their own conclusions.
The cancellation follows sustained opposition from some Nigerian public figures, influencers and social media users who argued that hosting the South African singer at a time of renewed outrage over the treatment of Nigerians in South Africa would send the wrong message.
Content creator Solomon Buchi was among the earliest voices to oppose the concert, insisting that “the show must not happen” unless there was some acknowledgement of the plight of Nigerians facing xenophobic attacks. Social media activist VeryDarkMan also warned promoters against staging the event, saying the concert “is not happening” and threatening resistance if organisers attempted to proceed.
