Twelve dead, including five children, as Joburg-bound bus overturns on N1, Free State

A bus overturned on the N1 near Trompsburg, killing 12 people and injuring 66 others.

The death toll from a bus crash on the N1 near Trompsburg in the Free State stands at 12, while 66 people have been injured after the vehicle overturned while travelling from Cape Town to Johannesburg on Thursday night.

The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) confirmed the updated figures on Friday, saying the crash happened on the N1 between Trompsburg and Edenburg.

RTMC spokesperson Simon Zwane said emergency services responded quickly to the scene as reported by IOL.

"Emergency services responded swiftly to the scene, where 66 passengers also sustained injuries and were transported to nearby medical facilities for treatment."
