Preá Beach lies within Jericoacoara National Park, about 15 minutes from the city's airport in the northeastern Brazilian state of Ceará. It is often the first stop for both beginners and experienced kitesurfers, attracting visitors with winds of 24 to 30 knots during the season, which runs from July to early January.Unlike Jericoacoara, where visitors are drawn by sightseeing and nightlife, people who travel to Preá come primarily for kitesurfing. They include French, German and American tourists, as well as Brazilian business executives.
"Kitesurfing has become the new golf, the new tennis, the new skiing. It's the latest elite sport, for better or for worse," said Marco Dalpozzo, a partner at Rancho do Peixe guesthouse.
About 90 minutes from Jericoacoara Airport, Tatajuba has become the new hotspot for kitesurfers looking for a more rustic and intimate destination. According to Teresa Mindelo, owner of the Tatadise guesthouse, most visitors are foreign tourists under the age of 30 seeking "good accommodation without ostentation."
