Brazil's Minister of Development, Industry, Trade and Services, Márcio Elias Rosa, said on Thursday (July 30) that Brazil will ask the United States to lower tariff rates and expand the list of exemptions to the 37.5% tariffs imposed by the White House.The Brazilian government expects to resume talks with the United States in August, once the tariffs introduced this month are fully in effect. "If they don't approach us, we'll approach them," Elias Rosa said, noting that no bilateral meeting has yet been scheduled.
According to the minister, the Brazilian negotiating team agreed with Jamieson Greer, head of the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR), to remain at the negotiating table even if the tariffs are ultimately enforced.
"The last meeting we had was on July 14, the day before the first announcement of the 25% tariff package. The meeting ended with a mutual commitment that we would resume talks," he said.
