The Anglo-Indians Welfare Federation of India (AIWFI) has urged the Union government to categorise English as a native language. In a letter to the Prime Minister and the Union Minister for Education, the federation said, “English is the medium of instruction in all subjects in most schools across the country along with an additional native language. The categorisation of English overnight as a foreign language amounts to violation of the students’ rights.”The Union government has been implementing the three-language criteria since July 1 in the country from Class 9 onwards.President of the federation Augustine Roy Rozario added that the categorisation of English as a foreign language will affect the five lakh Anglo-Indians settled in the country. “They have adopted English as their mother tongue and will be compelled to learn their main subjects in two or three native Languages in addition to the English language which could ultimately lead to the destruction of their Mother tongue.” he said.Rozario urged the Union government to categorise the English Language as one of the native languages in the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, to enable students to continue their education.
