The vessel caught fire with the blaze spreading to a nearby Greek-owned LNG tanker, the GasLog Salem.Egypt’s oil ministry said no one was injured in the fires.‌The Egyptian Cabinet said today in its statement: “After the fire that affected two vessels at Damietta Port on July 29, 2026, was brought under control, preliminary investigations by the relevant authorities found that the incident was caused by a drone.”Black smoke could be seen rising over the port in videos posted on social media. While there has been no confirmation where the drone came from or who was behind the attack, suspicion has fallen on Iran.Iran and its allies have carried out similar attacks on tankers in the Gulf and the Red Sea as well as targeting energy infrastructure in neighbouring countries since the start of the war with the US and Israel.‌If Iran is behind the attacks this incident would be the first time Egypt has come under attack from the country. Implying that Iran or its proxies were responsible, US President Donald Trump told reporters on Wednesday: "It's a little more of the same.
