European football’s governing body Uefa has threatened an unprecedented boycott of the World Cup on Thursday, declaring the tournament "is not for sale" as the rift over Fifa's controversial private investment plan escalated into open warfare.
In an extraordinary statement, Uefa confirmed that its national teams will refuse to participate in any Fifa competition unless Gianni Infantino’s governing body completely abandons its proposal to sell stakes in a new commercial subsidiary to private investors.
"No Uefa national teams will participate in any Fifa competition for so long as these proposals remain alive, unless this proposal has been abandoned in its entirety and binding assurances have been given that Fifa will never again open its governance or competitions to private ownership," Uefa stated.
"The World Cup cannot be treated as an investment product... No part of it should ever be surrendered to private investors. The World Cup is not for sale."
