Police Constable Romell Kerry Douglas was shot dead during what investigators said was an attempted robbery in Caroni on Tuesday night.His licensed gun was also taken during the attack.Senior Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) officers yesterday observed a minute of silence during their news conference in honour of the murdered officer.Senior officers, including ASP Joel Forbes, ASP Ancil Corrie and TTPS Public Information Officer ASP Owie Russell, stood with their hands clasped in front of them as the tribute was held before the start of the news conference.Russell said Commissioner of Police Allister Guevarro and the executive of the TTPS also extended condolences to Douglas’ family, friends and colleagues.Police said Douglas, 48, who was attached to the Four Roads Police Station but was off duty at the time, was sitting in his vehicle at the corner of Hydraulic Trace and Caroni South Bank Road, Kelly Village, around 11.05 p.m. on Tuesday when a white Nissan Tiida pulled up alongside him.Police said the occupants of the vehicle attempted to rob the officer, resulting in an exchange of gunfire.Douglas shot back, hitting one of the men before he died, police stated. During the incident, Douglas’ licensed firearm was taken.First responders found Douglas with gunshot wounds around 11.15 p.m. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
