The Independent Commission of Investigations has launched a probe into the fatal police shooting of a man in St Catherine on Thursday night.Reports are that about 8:45 p.m., members of the St Catherine South Quick Response Unit were on patrol in the Gilbert Avenue area of Dunbeholden, Portmore, when they observed a man allegedly standing with a firearm tucked in his waistband.Police say they tactically approached a premises and heard movement inside. Upon reaching the rear door, which was open, officers observed two men, one of whom matched the description of the individual earlier seen with the firearm, reports say. The man allegedly pulled the weapon and opened fire at the police. Officers took evasive action and returned fire. One of the men reportedly fled the scene.The armed man ran inside the house and was pursued by police. Upon reaching the kitchen, he allegedly pointed the firearm at officers, and a second exchange of gunfire ensued.When the shooting subsided, the man was found suffering from gunshot wounds. He was reportedly still clutching a Beretta pistol fitted with a magazine containing eight rounds of ammunition.He was assisted to the Spanish Town Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.Ruddy Mathison contributed to this report.
