European nations will boycott the World Cup unless Fifa president Gianni Infantino abandons his controversial plan to sell off stakes to private investors.
Uefa’s 55 member associations held a virtual crisis meeting on Thursday afternoon after the news first broke on Tuesday.
Their response was unequivocal, with Uefa saying in a statement: “No Uefa national teams will participate in any Fifa competition for so long as these proposals remain alive, unless this proposal has been abandoned in its entirety and binding assurances have been given that Fifa will never again open its governance or competitions to private ownership.”
Fifa released details of its proposed Fifa Forward Enterprise (FFE) following a report in The Times.
World football’s governing body said FFE would remain owned and controlled by itself but that minority stakes would be sold to private investors.
