Here’s a number worth sitting with: 95% of 300 public enterprise AI projects showed little or no measurable profit-and-loss impact, according to an MIT NANDA study. Companies spent the money, deployed the tools, and largely got nothing back. The industry’s response to this awkward reality is to throw a new type of engineer at the problem.
Forward-deployed engineers, or FDEs, are the specialists companies now want desperately. Their job is to embed directly inside a client’s operations, configure AI systems to fit real workflows, and make sure the technology actually produces something useful.
From buzzword to billion-dollar hiring wave
FDE job postings increased over 1,000% year-over-year through early 2026. Across 39 AI companies, researchers tracked 224 open FDE roles as of mid-2026, a figure that understates the full demand since it excludes internal headcount already placed.
OpenAI moved first and loudest. The company launched a dedicated FDE business unit in May 2026, backed by over $4 billion in external investment, with plans to hire thousands of these specialists. Salesforce committed to bringing on 1,000 FDEs of its own.
