TN govt forms expert committee to advise on mitigating El Nino challenges

In an official statement the state government said that there is a high probability of a severe El Nino effect developing in 2026.

The Government of Tamil Nadu has constituted an Expert Advisory Committee to advise the Tamil Nadu Disaster Risk Reduction Agency (TNDRRA) on the steps to be taken to address the challenges posed by strong El Nino. The Committee will comprise academicians and researchers from institutes like IIT Madras, Anna University and Suganthi Devadason Marine Research Institute (SMRI), Tamil Nadu Marine Research Foundation (TNMRF as well as other related agencies, including Tamil Nadu Green Climate Company (TNGCC), WRI India, Tamil Nadu Marine Research Foundation (TNMRF), and officials from State government agencies.In an official statement the state government said that there is a high probability of a severe El Nino effect developing in 2026. Consequently, the Southwest Monsoon rainfall could be below normal, potentially affecting water inflow into the Cauvery River and irrigation facilities. Furthermore, extreme weather events, including heavy rainfall and flooding, are anticipated during the Northeast Monsoon,” the statement read.Published on July 30, 2026
