The Andhra Pradesh Rythu Sangham on Thursday demanded the immediate withdrawal of Government Order (G.O.) No. 470, alleging that the GO implementation would significantly reduce compensation payable to farmers whose lands are acquired for public projects. The organisation warned of launching state-wide protests if the government failed to fulfil their demands.The farmers’ organisation president V. Krishnaiah and secretary K. Prabhakar Reddy stated in a release that the State government was already paying lower compensation under the provisions of the Land Acquisition Act, 2013, when compared with several other States. The implementation of G.O. 470, it said, would further increase the burden on farmers.Pointing out that the farmers from Devarapalli mandal in West Godavari district had approached the High Court seeking compensation in accordance with the provisions of the 2013 Act, they recalled, the court ruled in favour of the farmers in 2019.Following the judgment, the government issued G.O. 470, revising the method used to calculate additional compensation. Under the new norms, lands located within a two-kilometre radius of municipal corporations, municipalities and nagar panchayats would receive only 5% additional compensation. Lands situated between two and five kilometres from urban limits would receive 10%, while those beyond five kilometres would be eligible for 25% compensation, they said.The leaders alleged that the order deprived many farmers of benefits they had previously enjoyed and made it difficult for them to purchase alternative land because of rising market prices.
