After the Coimbatore district administration issued an order directing six quarries in the surroundings of 10 Muthur in Kinathukadavu Taluk to suspend operations, on Wednesday, Muruganantham, a protesting farmer, withdrew his nine-day fast demanding stringent action.The temporary ban directive was issued based on an audit report of a Revenue Department team on the reported violation of norms by the six quarries that had been operating on government land.Mr. Muruganantham’s protest highlighted the large-scale movement of minerals into Kerala from the six quarries, and impact of the unauthorised mining on agricultural land and natural environment.The district administration has to impose hefty fines as per law on the quarry operators for violating the norms, the Tamil Nadu Farmers’ Protection Movement and other fraternal entities has demanded.
