A 226% surge in online loan applications from over-indebted South Africans during May and June 2026 reflects growing financial pressure as rising living costs, unemployment, higher interest rates and winter expenses leave many households relying on credit to cover basic necessities.

South Africans are turning to credit in record numbers as rising living costs and mounting economic pressure push many households deeper into financial distress.

New data released by National Debt Advisors shows that online loan applications from over-indebted consumers increased by 226% during May and June 2026, highlighting what analysts describe as a growing debt trap affecting vulnerable households.

The findings are based on an assessment of 1,571 applicants conducted between October 2025 and June 2026.

Sebastien Alexanderson, head of National Debt Advisors, said the sharp increase reflects the cumulative impact of several economic pressures hitting households simultaneously.
