The latest MG3 is priced to compete in South Africa's budget hatchback segment.
After experiencing an almost endless array of SUVs, it was refreshing to get behind the low-slung wheel of a hatchback again.
Although a handful of hatchbacks remain popular in our market, such as Volkswagen’s Polo and Hyundai’s i10, we haven’t yet seen a strong contender from China — but the latest MG3 seems to be all that and more.
Despite its hot-hatch looks, the MG3 brings the usual Chinese bargain pricing. The latest MG3 is positioned firmly at the budget end of the segment. Priced at R269,900 in Comfort manual form, R309,900 as a CVT and R344,900 in Luxury CVT guise, it aims to offer a Polo competitor for Polo Vivo money. It even comfortably undercuts the Hyundai i20, which starts at R329,900.
Oh, and there’s also a rather powerful hybrid version, but with a price tag of R469,900, it is likely to fall outside the budgets of most hatchback buyers.
