On Wednesday, July 29, the social media platform X suspended the Persian- and Arabic-language accounts of Tasnim News Agency, a media outlet affiliated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). Earlier, the messaging app Telegram had also shut down the IRGC’s official channel.
The suspension of these accounts is consistent with online platforms’ policies aimed at countering the activities of sanctioned military entities and preventing the use of social networks for security and military operations.
The IRGC reacted to the move by issuing a statement claiming that the suspension of its public relations account was “a sign of fear within the front of arrogance over precise data and coordination among the free nations of the region.”
In the statement, the IRGC Public Relations Office declared that after citizens from regional countries, including Jordan and Kuwait, sent information regarding US base locations and troop movements through the designated Telegram account, “enemies” attempted to sever this connection by blocking the IRGC’s user accounts.
The statement further asserted that closing the IRGC’s social media accounts could not prevent the “exchange of information and awareness-raising,” describing the action as a sign of the “decline and desperation of the front of arrogance.”
