The police in Crete has launched an operation in the mountain village of Zoniana, escorting inspectors conducting livestock checks linked to agricultural subsidy claims, authorities said Thursday.
The operation, now in its second day, involves inspections of farms and livestock registers to verify animals declared by producers receiving payments through Greece’s disgraced agricultural subsidies agency, OPEKEPE, and other funding programs.
The on-site findings will be compared with producers’ subsidy declarations for any discrepancies.
Police officers are also carrying out on-site checks at dozens of locations in the wider area for other violations.
